Anthony Bedell

I offer once or twice weekly psychotherapy from my practice in Littlehampton, West Sussex. For those not able to attend I work online or by phone.

People often feel anxious and worried; some are at the end of their tether.  I seek to provide a safe, containing space where you can gradually be in touch with and explore your feelings. Some people deeply want things to change in their life, and I see my role as being alongside you as you look to find a fuller way of living and develop new ways of relating to others.

I normally suggest that you contact me for an initial discussion so that we can meet and get a sense of how it might be to work together.

What's a Psychotherapist?

People have often heard more about counselling than about psychotherapy.  Psychotherapy is similar to counselling but the training is longer:  For example, I trained for 6 years with the Society of Analytical Psychology.  In both psychology and counselling therapists offer a space for people to talk, a place to go to help them be better able to deal with life’s problems.

My training was Jungian, which means that I listen for feelings as one of the most sacred activities.  I am also interested in working with dreams – Freud suggested that dreams were the royal road to hearing what people feel and think at the deepest level.  I also believe that people can hold experiences in their bodies and that must try to listen to the body.  You can probably hear that I believe that our pasts can influence how we are now, and that we can make sense of feelings by joining up different parts of our experience.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
For some new delight. (J.D. Rumi)

How do I work?

I work in Littlehampton, West Sussex. There is plenty of free parking available nearby and my practice is easily accessible by public transport. Individual appointments last for 50 minutes and are arranged according to what is possible for you.

I offer open-ended therapy, which means it is not limited to a certain number of sessions. Some people only want to come for a few sessions; others stay with me for longer.

Empathy and truth, at our deepest we search for both

I have worked both in the NHS Psychological Services  (in Chichester) and in counselling services in the voluntary sector.

I am a member of the Society of Analytical Psychology; of the International Association for Analytical Psychology; and of the British Psychoanalytic Council.
